The fancy dress ball described on this invitation was sponsored by the Purim Association at the Academy of Music, to raise funds for the building fund of the Hebrew Benevolent and Orphan Asylum Society. The Purim Association was started in 1862 to celebrate the Purim holiday, and became the premier social event of the season in New York German Jewish society. More than 2500 people attended the annual event, raising significant funds for Jewish charities and garnering media attention.
