Leon Halperin used this pocket chess set while serving in the US Army during World War II. The box, designed for mailing, holds a wooden chessboard and a small orange box with red and white plastic pieces.

Halperin immigrated to the US from Romania with his mother in 1927, although his mother died during the trip. Leon?s father, Abraham, had previously come to the US from Romania in 1913. Abraham worked in the garment industry and Leon was a postal clerk before joining the Army.
