Josef Sawiarski, a resident of Josefow, Poland, rescued this Torah scroll fragment, which includes the end of the Vayikrah [Leviticus], from the street after the destruction of the synagogue by the Germans in 1942. Sawiarski kept it for over 50 years. During the summer of 2000, Sawiarski gave it to the artifact donor, who was visiting Poland from England. The fragment, which had been kept in Sawiarski?s workshop, was dirty, crumpled, and speckled with paint.
