Samuel Birnholz (b. Poland 1918) used this surveyor?s instrument while working as a paver in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The wooden carrying box was made for the instrument in Berlin by E. Heckendorff. Birnholz took the instrument from Auschwitz and brought it with him when he immigrated to the US.
