This photograph was taken in 1988 by Ira Nowinski, an artist from San Francisco. It appeared in his book: In Fitting Memory: The Art & Politics of Holocaust Memorials. The photograph shows bunks in a women?s barrack in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest camp in the Auschwitz camp system. Approximately 1.3 million people were murdered there, of which 1.1. million were Jews.
