This photograph was taken in 1988 by Ira Nowinski, an artist from San Francisco. It appeared in his book: In Fitting Memory: The Art & Politics of Holocaust Memorials. The photograph shows the entrance to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration/death camp in Poland. On the right is a sign warning of the outer electrified fence.

The sign at the entrance, ?Arbeit Macht Frei?, translates from the German as ?Work makes you free.? This sign was used by the Nazis to deceive new prisoners arriving at the camp.
