Picon, a star of Yiddish theater and film was was born in New York City in 1898. She married Jacob Kalich, manager of the Boston Grand Opera House, in 1919. They collaborated on many memorable Yiddish stage productions. Picon was extremely popular in the 1920?s. When the popularity of Yiddish theater faded, Picon began performing English speaking roles on Broadway, in films and on television. She played the role of Yenta in the 1971 film "Fiddler on the Roof." Picon died in 1992.
