Gift of Ruth Schwarz
Id no. 219.93, Other
This puppet is of the Scribe of the Heavenly Courts, a character from a story by I.L. Peretz, “Bontsche the Silent.” It was created by Simche Schwarz in 1948 in Paris and used in a production by the Hakl-Bakl Jewish Puppet Theater.
Simche Shwarz was active in the Yiddish theater of Romania before World War II. He met his wife, the artifact donor, when they were refugees in Switzerland in 1942. After the war, Simche and Ruth were instrumental in the creation of a puppet theater, Hakl-Bakl, first in a Swiss Displaced Persons Camp, then in Paris. The famous painter Marc Chagall was also involved in the theater; he designed puppets and scenery.
