British authorities held Jewish "illegal" immigrants, most of them Holocaust survivors trying to enter Palestine, on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

Artist Albert Dov Sigal (1912-1970) made this brooch with the image of a ship and the word "Cyprus" in Hebrew at the bottom. He sold pins for money to supplement his family's meals.
