Kennkarte of Walter "Israel" Schindler, with J
Gift of Fredric and Rosalie Frost
Id no. 749.92, Document, German
All Germans - "Aryans" as well as Jews - were required to carry identity papers (kennkarten) at all times. In addition, Nazi law demanded that Jews who did not have easily identifiable Jewish names add "Israel," for a man, or "Sara," for a woman. The kennkarten is also marked with a "J" for "Jude" (Jew).
