Interior of main Trieste temple with books confiscated by the Nazis
Gift of Comunita Ebraica di Trieste
Id no. 2116.90, Photograph
This is a photograph of the main temple in Trieste, Italy c. 1943. The synagogue was filled with books confiscated by Nazis from Jewish homes and communities. Allegedly, the Nazis intended to transform the synagogue into a swimming pool, but abandoned the project due to the impracticality of removing the large number of books.
