Postcard from Emilie Siegel from Gurs camp asking for a package
Gift of Irene Shomberg
Id no. 1850.90, Correspondence, German
Emilie Siegel wrote this postcard to the Westheimers of Lisbon, Portugal, thanking them for their assistance. Siegel was among the Jews who were expelled in October 1940 from southern Germany to France. Siegel, who became a prisoner at the Gurs internment camp, received care packages while in Gurs from Friedrich Westheimer. The packages consisted of such items as clothing, soup, coffee, cheese, and chocolate. Westheimer kept a notebook listing the names and addresses of the various people to whom he sent packages, and the items sent in each.
