Fay Rechtman arrived in Israel from New York in 1947 as an engineering student. She joined the Haganah, the underground military force that merged into Israel's army in 1948. This jacket was originally from a British army uniform. "There was so little time between the declaration of the UN and the British leaving, there wasn't time to equip an army. So we just grabbed whatever was around, bits and pieces. British, American, French, Czech."
