To reduce overcrowding in preparation for the visit by the Red Cross, thousands, particularly the most elderly and infirm, were deported to Auschwitz.

Czech artist Leo Haas was deported to Terezin in 1942, where he secretly created hundreds of sketches. After the war, he produced more complex works based on his earlier art and Ghetto experiences.
