Josef and Irmgard Koeppel tried to escape Germany aboard the St. Louis. But when the ship was forced back to Europe, they were sent to France. A few months later the Nazis occupied France. In 1942, the Koeppel's made an agonizing choice to leave their four-year-old daughter Judith with a French Catholic family. In this letter, Judith's maternal aunt writes to her paternal grandfather to let him know where the child is.
