Gilad Shalit was abducted by Hamas militants in a cross-border raid via underground tunnels near the Israeli border with Gaza on June 25, 2006. The Hamas militants held him for over five years, until his release on 18 October 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal. Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser were abducted by Hezbollah members on July 12, 2006 in Israel near the Lebanese border. On July 15, 2008, coffins containing the remains of the two soldiers were returned to Israel as part of a prisoner exchange.
