Israel Langsam writes that he had sailed to Haifa on the ship Shaar Yishuv, and had then been transported to Cyprus and interned. He reports that is very hot, but that conditions are good; that he believes that it will take several months to get entrance permits to Palestine; that he had heard from an uncle in New York who was secretary of the Galician committee. The return address indicates that he was a member of Ha-shomer Ha-za'ir, a socialist Zionist youth organization.
British authorities held Jewish "illegal" immigrants, most of them Holocaust survivors trying to enter Palestine, on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.
