In Stutthof, Abraham Melezin's nickname was "Professor." He had been a professor of geography in Vilna before the war. Young Poles asked him questions, and gradually he began short lectures, usually Sunday afternoons when all inmates had one half day free. They supplied him with a notebook for written notes. Topics ranged from astronomy through geology to geography. The notebook also contains notes of English lessons which a Danish inmate gave him in return for Polish.
