On October 25, 1914, representatives of 39 Jewish organizations met to form the American Jewish Relief Committee under the initial guidance of the American Jewish Committee, which had been founded in 1906. It joined with the Orthodox Central Jewish Relief Committee to form the Joint Distribution Committee.

In Springfield, relief efforts under the American Jewish Relief Committee began around 1915, with support from both organizations and individuals.
