Alfred Wertheim was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1900. He was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1938. Upon his release in May or June of 1939, he escaped to Shanghai with his mother and brother. Many Jews went to Shanghai during the war because no visa was required for entry.

From 1921, New York State required proof of literacy in English in order to vote.
