Alfred Wertheim was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1900. He was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1938. Upon his release in May or June of 1939, he escaped to Shanghai with his mother and brother. Many Jews went to Shanghai during the war because no visa was required for entry. Wertheim traveled from Shanghai, and arrived in San Francisco on April 20, 1948.
