Many Jews went to Shanghai during the war because no visa was required for entry.

Alfred Wertheim was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1900. He was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1938. Upon his release in May or June of 1939, he escaped to Shanghai with his mother and brother.
