Gift of Elsie O. Sang in memory of Philip D. Sang
Id no. 141.88, Judaica
This silver charity box dates from 1865. The center plaque is engraved with a synagogue scene, while the other three sides feature Hebrew text pertaining to burial societies (Chevra Kadisha). Chevrot Kadisha are voluntary burial societies where members purify and prepare Jews for a burial according to Jewish law. Membership in a Chevra Kadisha is considered a noble act of loving kindness or Gemilut Hasadim.
