In this photograph, Mel Rosenthal captured Aron Aronov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan who came to the US in 1989. Aronov is dressed in traditional Bukharan garb and surrounded by traditional Bukharan objects. The picture was taken at a festival in Battery Park in 1995. Aronov runs a Bukharan museum in Rego Park, Queens, New York.
Mel Rosenthal was born and raised in the South Bronx in the 1940s and 1950s. He graduated from City College and received a Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut. The subjects of his photography include the South Bronx, Nicaragua, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, and refugees in New York City.
