This is the 1935-1936 membership card of David Ehrenhalt for the Jewish Cultural Federation of Dusseldorf. Originally called the Cultural Federation of German Jews, the Nazis forced the federation to remove ?German? from its name in 1935.

Ehrenhalt and his family moved to Dusseldorf, Germany in 1930 to take over his brother?s laundry supply business. Ehrenhalt was a Zionist who was active in helping Jews get out of Nazi concentration camps.

The Ehrenhalt family was able to escape Nazi Germany for the US after an aunt in New York started the immigration process on their behalf and without their knowledge. They left for New York on June 30, 1936, Ehrenhalt?s son Samuel?s eleventh birthday.
